Call for Code AI
About
At the heart of the Call for Code initiative lies its Global Challenge - a four-month global competition uniting developers, human rights experts, and specialists to address some of humanity’s most urgent crises. In 2019, the challenge called on technologists worldwide to devise solutions for enhancing natural disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.
In its second year, the Global Challenge drew over 180,000 developers and data scientists from 165 countries, resulting in more than 5,000 innovative applications aimed at building resilience in the face of disaster.
Grand Prize:
Prometeo
The 2019 Call for Code Global Prize was awarded to Team Prometeo at the United Nations in New York on October 12, 2019. Led by a veteran firefighter, an emergency nurse, and three developers—Salomé Valero, Marco Rodriguez, Joan Herrera, Josep Ràfols, and Vicenç Ferrés Padró—Prometeo created a wearable device that monitors firefighter safety in real time, tracking carbon monoxide, smoke, humidity, and temperature. Just months after their win, they conducted their first field test during a controlled burn near Barcelona. Alongside a $200,000 prize, Prometeo secured a partnership with IBM to scale this life-saving solution globally.
