Call for Code AI

About

In 2020, the Call for Code Global Challenge broadened its mission, launching dual tracks to confront two urgent global crises: the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. These formidable threats endanger not only public health but also the very stability of our planet and collective future.

Recognizing both the immediate and lasting impacts of these issues, developers worldwide were invited to devise transformative solutions:

COVID-19: Open-source technology was called upon to mitigate the pandemic’s toll by enhancing crisis communications, supporting remote learning, and fostering community resilience.

Climate Change: Innovators were urged to harness cutting-edge technology to drive progress in energy sustainability, water resource management, and disaster resilience.

Grand Prize:

Agrolly

The 2020 Call for Code Global Prize went to Team Agrolly, a team of developers from Brazil, India, Mongolia, and Taiwan, for creating an app that empowers small farmers to adapt to climate change. The virtual award ceremony, hosted by CNN’s Van Jones on October 13, 2020, celebrated Agrolly’s impact: integrating weather data from The Weather Company, NASA’s historical insights, and UN crop guidelines to offer farmers tailored information based on location, crop, and growth stage. This innovative tool not only addresses crucial information gaps but also enables farmers to make better-informed decisions, access financing, and improve economic outcomes. The team received $200,000 and will partner with IBM and The Linux Foundation to scale their solution globally.
